What is a Knox Box? How do I purchase one?

A Knox Box provides secure, non-destructive, emergency access to commercial and residential properites for first responders.  The cost of the box and installation is the responsibilty of the building owner.  For more information go to the Frederick County Fire Marshal website at www.fcva.us/fmo.  On the left hand side select "Knox Box"

You may purchase a Knox Box online through the Knox Company at www.knoxbox.com or by calling 1-800-552-5669.  

Do I need a tent permit from the Fire Marshal's Office?

If the tent is greater than 900 square feet or if more than 50 people will occupy the tent, you must submit a tent permit application to the Fire Marshal's Office.  You can visit www.fcva.us/fmo,  on the left hand side select "Code Enforcement"  click on "Operational Permits" and complete the tent permit application.  The completed application with all the required documentation will need to be submitted to the Fire Marshal's Office at least 15 days prior to planned use.  Also you will need to contact the Building Inspections Department at (540) 665-5650 to see what their requirements are for their tent permit.

If a permit is being issued by the Frederick County Fire Marshal's Office than an inspection of your tent is required. 

Please make sure to read the tent inspection checklist, on our website, this publication outlines the safety guidelines and permit application requirements related to tents and other membrane structures being used in Frederick County, VA.

Do I need a permit for my food truck?

A mobile food preparation vehicle is defined as a vehicle and/or enclosed trailer able to be occupied by persons during cooking operations that have cooking equipment that utilizes open flames or produces smoke or grease laden vapors for the purpose of preparing and serving food to the public.

If your mobile food preparation vehicle (food truck) meets the critiera as defined above, a valid Mobile Food Preparation Vehicle permit from your local Virginia Fire Marshal's office where your vehicle is registered or from the Virginia State Fire Marshal's Office may required to operate in Frederick County, VA.

More information and a permit application can be obtained by visiting our website at www.fcva.us/fmo, on the left hand side select "Code Enforcement" click "Operational Permits" and click on "Food Trucks".  There you will find the permit application.  You will also see a checklist that outlines the safety guidelines and permit application requirements related to Mobile Food Preparation Vehicles conducting business in Frederick County, VA.

When are you allowed to do open burning?

February 15th - April 30th open burning allowed only between 4:00pm - 12:00am per Department of Forestry (DOF) 

May 1st - September 30th open burning is PROHIBITED per Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ)

October 1st - February 14th open burning is permitted during the hours of 7am - 12Midnight.

Can I burn leaves?
Residents may burn leaves and brush.  Burning any trash, construction material or unnatural material is against the law!! Know the laws before you burn!! Visit our Open Burning page for more information.
Do you have a smoke alarm program?
Yes we do.  For information please visit www.fcva.us/fmo, on the left hand side select "Fire Prevention & Life Safefty Information", then select "Smoke Alarms".  There you will find information on our smoke alarm program, a link to complete our smoke alarm assessment form along with other important information about smoke alarms.
How do I get a copy of a fire report?
You can utilize the online report requesting system by visiting www.fcva.us and click on "FOIA Request" at the top of the page and complete the form.  Or you can call the Fire and Rescue Department at (540) 665-6350 to request a copy of the fire report.
Does the fire department service fire extinguishers?
The fire department does not service fire extinguishers.  There are many fire extinguisher companies in the area, you can do a google search to find one nearby.  Most portable fire extinguishers available at retail facilities are "disposable" after use, and do not require refilling.
I want to set off fireworks in my backyard. Are certain fireworks illegal to use?
Yes.  Any firework that explodes, rises into the air, moves across the ground or shoots projectiles into the air, is illegal to possess in Virginia.  These devices include firecrackers, roman candles, bottle rockets, and mortars.  The Fire Marshal's Office recommends that only fireworks sold at retail stands that have been inspected by our office be used.  You can find a list of public fireworks displays and approved retail stands on our website www.fcva.us/fmo select "Fire Prevention and Life Safety" and then "Safety with Fireworks".
I live in an apartment can I grill on my balcony?
No. The use of open flame grills is prohibited within 15 feet of an apartment building.  This includes propane grills as well as charcoal grills.
