Paid Time Off

Frederick County recognizes that employees have diverse needs requiring time off from work and believes that employees should have opportunities to enjoy time away from work to help balance their lives. The County has established a Paid Time Off policy to meet those needs.

Paid Time Off shall accrue as follows:

 Firefighters and EMTs on 2756 hours per year schedule, Paid Time Off shall accrue as follows:

Holidays

Frederick County observes at least 14 holidays. Essential personnel are compensated up to eight hours of straight time pay when they are required to work.

Family and Medical Leave

The FMLA entitles eligible employees of Frederick County to take unpaid, job-protected leave for specified family and medical reasons with continuation of group health insurance coverage under the same terms and conditions as if the employee had not taken leave. Eligible employees are entitled to:

  • Twelve workweeks of leave in a 12-month period for:
    • the birth of a child and to care for the newborn child within one year of birth;
    • the placement with the employee of a child for adoption or foster care and to care for the newly placed child within one year of placement;
    • to care for the employee’s spouse, child, or parent who has a serious health condition;
    • a serious health condition that makes the employee unable to perform the essential functions of his or her job;
    • any qualifying exigency arising out of the fact that the employee’s spouse, son, daughter, or parent is a covered military member on “covered active duty;” or
  • Twenty-six workweeks of leave during a single 12-month period to care for a covered service member with a serious injury or illness if the eligible employee is the servicemember’s spouse, son, daughter, parent, or next of kin (military caregiver leave).

Funeral Leave

When there is a death of a close family member, a full-time employee will be excused from work with pay. Funeral leave will not exceed three consecutive work days. If more than the allotted time is needed, or if leave is desired for a death other than the employee's family, other leave policies may be used.

Military Leave

Frederick County employees who are required to fulfill military obligations are entitled to 15 days of leave per federal fiscal year.
