Frederick County Names Assistant Fire Chief
WINCHESTER, VA, August 22, 2019: Frederick County is pleased to announce Steve Majchrzak (pronounced My-Shack) has accepted the position of Assistant Fire Chief of the Frederick County Fire and Rescue Department.
Assistant Chief Majchrzak is currently the Executive Director of the Tennessee Fire Service and Codes Enforcement Academy where he directs the work of over 100 full and part-time instructors and staff who provide 1,100 classes to over 15,000 firefighters and code officials annually. Steve brings over 20 years of successful senior management and leadership experience during which time he has dealt with a full range of business issues from human resources, budgeting, capital improvement projects, information technology, public affairs, and governmental relations.
“I look forward to returning to Virginia and being part of the Frederick County Fire and Rescue Department,” Majchrzak said. “I think my experience in every aspect of the fire service, coupled with my understanding of the needs of career staff and volunteer members, will be put to good use. I’m excited to have the opportunity to work with current management and field personnel alike.”
Majchrzak has served in the TN Department of Commerce and Insurance/State Fire Marshal's Office for a total of 12 years, where he originally served as the Assistant Commissioner for Administration. He left the department as the Deputy Commissioner/Chief Operating Officer to take advantage of the unique opportunity to serve as one of the three initial company officers/shift commanders tasked with starting the newly created career staff within the Rutherford County Fire Rescue (RCFR) – an all-hazards combination fire rescue department. RCFR serves over 85,000 people in a 511 square mile service area in partnership with five volunteer fire departments.
In 2016, the State recruited him to return to lead the day-to-day operations of the State Fire Marshal's Office and specifically to lead efforts to reorganize the Tennessee State Fire Service and Codes Enforcement Academy (TFACA) and the Fire Investigations Section. After two years as serving as the acting head of the State Fire Academy, he was named Executive Director in 2018. He has continued to stay active on the fire operations side since his return to the State as a volunteer Fire Captain with the Ashland City Fire Department.

Assistant Chief Majchrzak is dedicated to training and improving his abilities as a firefighter and fire service leader and holds fifteen state and national certifications including Fire Officer IV, Fire Instructor II, Fire Incident Safety Officer, Fire Inspector and Fire Investigator. Additionally, he is a Tennessee state-certified Advanced Emergency Medical Technician and holds a technical rescue certification in Swiftwater Rescue. He serves as the state-wide Emergency Services Coordinator for ESF-4 (Firefighting) with the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency. He was invited to join and train as part of the State's initial effort to build Type III Incident Management Teams to provide aid during large scale incidents. He serves as one of six members of the Tennessee All-Hazard Incident Management Team Governance Committee which establishes overall direction for Tennessee's All-Hazard Incident Management program and is a member of the Tennessee Fire Chief’s Association.
Raised in Burke, Virginia he left to attend college and graduate school at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN where he earned a BA in History and master’s degree in Public Policy. His parents have resided in Northern Virginia for over 45 years.
The Assistant Fire Chief position is a new position for FY2020 which began on July 1, 2019. Assistant Chief Marchrzak’s starting salary when he begins work on September 16 will be $110,000.00.
