If You Love Our Roads, Secure Your Load Campaign Kicks Off
Before setting out to haul away the trash, make sure the entire load makes it to the landfill: secure your load.
“If you love our roads, secure your load.” is the message from Frederick County Clean Sweep, the county’s litter initiative, as it joins forces with the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office to keep local roadways free from litter.
“Not only is litter an eyesore, but it endangers wildlife and the environment and can even lead to auto accidents resulting in personal property damage and loss of life,” said Gloria Puffinburger, Frederick County solid waste manager. “An often-overlooked consequence of litter is the billions of dollars in taxpayer money that is expended each year in the U.S. collecting roadside litter along with litter’s harmful impact on property values.”
Littering is illegal under county and state law and punishable by imprisonment of up to one year and/or a fine of up to $2,500.
Beginning this month, Frederick County will strive to heighten awareness about the importance of securing loads headed to the landfill and citizens’ convenience centers. Information will be provided on the county’s website and social media (#secureyourload) about the hazards associated with litter and how these issues can be prevented by properly loading vehicles before transport.
